Welcome to the SSQQ Christmas Carol Picture Puzzle!

Thank you for visiting our 2008 Christmas Carol Quiz site. The SSQQ Christmas Carol Trivia Puzzle is a top Internet puzzle for a good reason - it is challenging and fun to play in the process.  It also lends itself well to Seasonal gatherings.

This
quiz will give you a great start into the Christmas Season.  It consists of 120 pictures representing famous and semi-famous Christmas Carols.  Most of the early picture puzzles are easy, but after the Top 40, the remaining 80 clues require a little thought.  Your job is to decipher each riddle and come up with its name!

Most people
run across this site while web surfing.  For several years now, this puzzle has been at the top of any Google Search involving "Christmas Carol Puzzles".  As a result, around Christmas time, this becomes a much-visited page.  During the 2006 Christmas Season, 600 people emailed in for the answers.

I (Rick Archer) have discovered over the years this puzzle is a very popular activity for teachers looking for something creative to use at school in the days before Christmas Vacation. By the way, if you are a teacher, don't worry.  Your kids are safe here.  There are no pop-ups, no politics or religious agendas, no ads, no hidden links to porn sites, no cookies, no viruses, no spyware, and no evil messages.  I love Christmas and would not dream of doing something malicious.

In addition to school teachers, I am frequently contacted by people looking for activities to share with their church groups, office Christmas get-togethers, and family gatherings.  Let me assure you this puzzle is an excellent a game
to play at Christmas Parties because it can involve many people at once.  Depending on how many copies you print, individuals can play each other or you can divide into teams.

Please feel free to print out the entire puzzle if you wish.  It is my gift.  You may share it as many times as you like.  It is my hope that your group has as much fun playing as I had creating the puzzle.     Rick Archer, November 2008.

HOW THE SSQQ CHRISTMAS PUZZLE WORKS
Written by Rick Archer

Over the years, this puzzle has grown very large. In 2007 I decided to divide the puzzle into 2 parts.

Part One - Top Forty

The first 40 clues (the first four pages) are published year-round.  The answer to these 40 clues ( Top 40 Answers ) are published year-round.  This way no matter what time of the year it is, you can enjoy doing the SSQQ Christmas Puzzle.

This puzzle traces its origin to 24 clues that were the work of some unknown artist from back in the Eighties.  Early on I added 16 more clues to round it out to 40.  Since someone else did all the work, I feel these clues belong in the Public Domain for all to share.

For people who are too busy to work the entire puzzle of 120 picture clues, you can use these clues as a backup option.

Part Two - Eighty More clues
(posted from Thanksgiving thru Christmas Day)

These clues are my original work.  It is my wish that you share the puzzle far and wide.  You are more than welcome to use these clues for church parties, school assignments, office parties, and parties at your home as well as for your own pleasure.

However I would prefer you not use these clues for commercial purposes.

If you wish to receive the answers to the remaining 80 clues, you must first send me 40 correct answers from 41-120

I recommend you cross off the answers from the original forty clues on the 225 Clue List to save yourself some time.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!!

To start play, we suggest that you first print out the Clue List of 225 Christmas Carol Names. Using the list, you should be able to recognize many of the Picture Puzzle clues as you go through the puzzle  (Hint: whenever you get one, it is helpful to cross it off your list as you go along!)

bulletThere are two lists to choose from (chose which format you like best)

1.  Either print out Clue List One lower on this page
2.  Or print out the Clue List Two from the Clue List page.

bulletAfter you print out the Clue List, then go to Page One to begin.

WOULD YOU LIKE THE ANSWERS?

I will be happy to share the entire answer sheet on one condition: Please be aware I only supply the answer sheet if you first come up with 40 correct answers on your own from clues 41-120.

DO NOT - REPEAT - DO NOT SEND ME THE 40 ANSWERS FROM THE YEAR ROUND ANSWER SHEET.  THAT WON'T WORK.  THE ANSWERS MUST BE FROM CLUES 41 THROUGH 120

When you get 40 right from CLUES 41-120, send me the answers and I will happily send you the rest.  Santa will be so very proud of you!

One more thing: please put "SSQQ Christmas Puzzle" in the email heading. That should get it past the spam blockers.  I am not kidding.  90% of all email is automatically deleted.  But if I see the magic words, then I rescue the legitimate emails with your solution.  By the way, if three days pass and you don't get an answer, please try again.  I am very conscientious about responding.

Send your answers to Rick Archer at dance@ssqq.com

I will not respond to any email that does not include 40
or more correct answers.  You have my word on that.

About SSQQ Dance Studio and Rick Archer

SSQQ is the largest dance studio in Houston, Texas.  We teach people how to partner dance to Western, Salsa, Swing, Ballroom, Whip and West Coast Swing music.  Our studio is visited by over a thousand students a week.  Besides being a great place to learn to dance, SSQQ has the unique reputation of being a wonderful place to meet a husband or wife - we average close to 30 couples a year who meet here and eventually get married!

The SSQQ Web Site is maintained by Rick Archer, who is the owner of the dance studio.  Rick created the majority of the SSQQ Christmas Carol Puzzle.

Are you are curious about just what does "SSQQ" stand for?  Our studio's name is actually kind of clever. Take a wild guess.   (The answer is at the bottom of the page.)

How the SSQQ Christmas Carol Puzzle was Created
Written by Rick Archer, 2005

(This is the short version of the story. You can read the complete version at SSQQ Christmas Carol Puzzle Anecdotes )

FORWARD

It is important to note I do not claim to have originated this puzzle.  The truth is that I borrowed the work of an anonymous man or woman whose efforts preceded me and started there.

Later I began to make my own contributions.  I loved the original puzzle very much and have worked hard over the past ten years to honor its spirit.  Now that I am the 'Keeper of the Flame', it is my hope that someday I will learn the true origin of this puzzle.

1996

My first experience with the Picture Puzzle dates back to 1996.  Marla Jennings was an instructor at my dance studio.  One night around Christmas time, Marla handed me a sheet of paper with 24 blurry images.  She said they were clues of well-known Christmas Carols.  The idea was to guess the name of the Christmas Carol from the picture.

The picture to the right is one of the original 24 pictures  (Can you guess which Christmas Carol this is?) As you can see, the artwork was very rudimentary.  I doubt seriously if the person who first drew the puzzle was a professional artist.  But it wasn't necessary to have superior artwork.  The clues were so clever people were quickly hooked.  By the way, the answer is "Jingle Bells".

Quite frankly, I did very poorly on the test.  My memory of Christmas Carol titles was so bad I could only get about half right.  I wracked my brain, but I could not remember any names!   Nevertheless I thought the puzzle was very creative.  I was surprised how much fun it was even though I wasn't very good at it.

I would love to know who created the puzzle, but I doubt if I will ever find out.  After all, my own version of the Picture Puzzle has been posted on the Internet for ten years.  In that time, my version of the Christmas Puzzle has become so popular on the Internet that my Puzzle site gets thousands of hits each Christmas Season.  You would assume someone who knew the story of the Original Puzzle would eventually run across my web site and contact me, but it has never happened.

Unfortunately the trail has grown cold.  Based on what people have written, I estimate the Original Puzzle has to be at least 25 years old.  Many people who have written to ask me for the Answer List have told me they remember that same piece of paper very well.  A couple people have told me their memory of the Original Puzzle goes all the way back into the early 1980s.

I remain disappointed that not one person has ever offered even a single hint as to its origin.  However, you never know!  Maybe one of these days I will get lucky and someone will come across this site and will take the time to share more information.

By the way, if you would like to see a copy of the Original Puzzle that was the inspiration for my updated version, click here.

1999

I lost track of my copy of the Original Puzzle.  In fact, I completely forgot about it after my brief encounter in 1996.  Then one day in October 1999 I decided it was time to organize my junk desk because it was about to collapse under the weight of all the papers, etc, I had thrown on it over the years. You see, I have two desks - one desk I work at and another 'Junk Desk' where I throw things to look at later.  As you can gather, 'later' can mean anywhere from next week to next century.

As I dug down to the 1996 layer of papers I discovered the copy Marla Jennings had given me.  Lo and behold, the piece of paper had been laying there under a mound of other papers right where I had left it three years earlier.

I smiled when I saw the Original Puzzle again.  I remembered that after work that night in 1996, I had brought home the copy Marla Jennings had given me.  No doubt I tossed it on the junk desk and forgot about it.  Over the years, various other papers came to rest on top of it.  If you know me, you would understand that looking for things in my office resembles an archeological search.

Curious, I tried solving some of the riddles again. As I racked my brain, I recalled how much fun I had trying to solve the puzzle the first time. Sad to say, I didn't do any better the second time than I did the first, but I was hooked nonetheless.  In the quiet of my office, I began to realize how cute and clever the puzzle was.  I immediately wanted to share it with my friends.

That is when I got to the idea to publish the pictures on the Internet as a challenge for some of my dance students.  By coincidence, just a year earlier (October 1998) I had gone online with the SSQQ Dance Studio Web Site.  I was looking for something to generate interest in my web site.

Since the 1999 Christmas Season was just around the corner, why not give it a try?

So I scanned the pictures into my computer.  But there was a problem.  When I took a look at the pictures on my screen, I realized they were in pretty sad shape!

Who knows which generation of the artwork I was looking at?  Was this really the "Original"?  Or had someone tried to improve on the artwork?   Furthermore, I had been given a mediocre copy of a copy.  From the poor condition of the puzzle copy that Marla Jennings handed me, it was fairly obvious this sheet had been faxed a few million times before it reached me.

The Fax machine was the dominant business tool in the Nineties.  In the days before the Internet, office copiers and fax machines had sent the Original Puzzle spinning around the country.  I imagine that each time the puzzle was copied, its quality would deteriorate a little.

Maybe there was something I could do.
I decided to try using my trusty Paint Shop Pro computer art program to touch up the pictures a little.  Although I have absolutely no artistic ability, I discovered I was fairly good at improving the poor quality of the original artwork using the computer.  Plus it was fun!

Then I published the puzzle on my web site.  My idea paid off.  My friends at the dance studio got a huge kick out of solving the puzzle.

2000

Flush with satisfaction over the success of my puzzle in 1999, in the following year 2000 I decided to create some clue pictures of my own.  I added 16 pictures to the original 24 Pictures to bring the total to 40 pictures in 2000.

In 2001 I added 16 more pictures I created myself.  Since then I have expanded the quiz several times with more pictures as the spirit moved me.

I have had to overcome two problems.  Since I can't draw myself, finding the correct artwork to express the clue has been difficult at times.

I am sure the readers will have no trouble spotting the difference between my work and that of my unknown predecessor.  The picture on the left is the original and the one on the right is mine.

Before you compliment me on my wonderful artwork, please be advised I use professional artwork created by an art service known as Dynamic Graphics.

Another problem with this quiz is determining the fine line between too difficult and too easy.

For example, after I created the picture on the right, I was disappointed when NO ONE ever got the right answer.  I took another look and realized the clue was much too vague (don't bother guessing; I'll give it to you: "Auld Lang Syne".... "Old Long Sign")

What a pathetic clue.  No one got it!   Back to the drawing board.  I realized that for the puzzle to work, the clues have to make sense.  It was a good lesson.   People don't mind hard clues, but I have to at least give them a fighting chance.  If I list too many clues that no one can get, then people get frustrated.  Over the years, I have always gone back and reworked clues that no one could get.

2002: The Puzzle Takes Off!

I made a very significant change in 2002.   Recalling the difficulty I had remembering titles to songs when I first took the test, I realized the game would be a lot easier to play if there was a List of Carol titles.  However, rather than just match 56 titles to 56 pictures, I decided to make things a bit more challenging by listing 100 names for 56 puzzles.

By adding the title list, the puzzle got a lot easier.  Something very interesting started to happen - that change catapulted this puzzle to national and international popularity.

In 2002 I received a phenomenal number of email requests for the Answer Sheet.  As I checked email addresses, I realized they were sent from all over the country.  That puzzled me a lot.   After all, I thought the only people who knew about the puzzle were people from my dance studio, but now I could see that people from all over the globe were checking in.  I was baffled.

It took me a while, but eventually I figured out that Search Engines like Google were the culprit.  I didn't even know what 'Search Engines' were at that point.  But someone wrote "Google" in an email and I started nosing around.  I found that people were typing in words like "Christmas", "Puzzle", "Carol" into Google and the link to my Christmas Puzzle web page was popping up like crazy.

Suddenly my audience was no longer limited to Houston-area dance students. The whole world was web surfing to my puzzle.

2004

As of 2004, this puzzle would appear on the first page anytime you type "Christmas Carol Puzzle" into Google.  Now that the puzzle had become so popular, I was encouraged to add new pictures.

In 2004 I added my first new page in three years to hit 64 clues.

2005

Then in 2005 I added 16 more clues to bring our total to 80.  I also bumped the Clue List Chart up from 100 Titles to 168 Titles.

2006

Once I hit 80, I just couldn't help myself - I was obsessed with reaching 100!   So I searched the Internet to find more titles of Christmas Carols.  To my surprise, I found a lot of song titles I had never heard of.  No matter.  There was no rule that said I had to have heard of the title to make it valid.  As long as I included a list of the carols included the puzzle, any title was fair game.

These new titles gave me the boost I needed.  Now I was able to create 20 new puzzles and boost the clue list up to 180.

At the urging of many people who wrote in for the answers, in 2006 I decided to add color.  Imagine that.  As a result, the 2007 version of the puzzle had a slightly different look to it, but it seemed to be as fun as ever.

2007

In 2007, I bumped the Puzzle from 100 clues up to 120.  In addition I expanded the Clue List from 180 to 225.  However when I stopped to look at the puzzle, I realized it had grown too large.  Too many clues also meant the puzzle had grown too hard.

In life, there are people who like the easy Sudoku and Jigsaw puzzle and there are those who like the difficult levels.  Why not try and have the best of both worlds?

So I decided to divide the puzzle into two parts - the original 24 plus 16 of my own would serve as Part One.  In addition I would provide the answers.  This way people who were in a hurry would not have to work the entire puzzle.

Part Two would consist of the next 80 clues, all of which I created myself.  We would play this section by the old rules: give me 40 correct answers and I will give you the rest.

However 80 is a goofy number.  I expect to add 20 more clues for 2008 to make Part Two reach 100 clues.

I hope you have a great time solving the puzzle and sharing it with your friends!

By the way, one final note - Did you know that the SSQQ Christmas Carol Puzzle is now the Number One Puzzle on the Internet?Take a look for yourself.

2007- The SSQQ Christmas Puzzle becomes Number One on the Internet - Thank you all very much for your support!  Rick Archer

It is very flattering to discover my puzzle is the most popular Internet Christmas Puzzle in English.  But, as they say, I could not have accomplished this without the help of visitors like you.

I am very grateful to all of you who have played my Christmas Carol Puzzle Game over the years.  Your interest makes me proud to make this contribution.  Thank you very much.

I hope you have a great time solving the 2007 puzzle.  By all means, please share it with your friends!

Are you ready to try the Puzzle?   Don't forget to print out the Clue List first.  The Puzzle is nearly impossible to solve without the Clue List.
