SOCK HOP PARTY LINE
DANCES- Rick
Level of Difficulty: Mostly Easy
Special Note:
For the first time in twenty years, this class will NOT be offered the night
of the party. Instead we will offer this class for FREE on 4 different
nights the week of the party.
We
will teach these dances for FREE on the following nights from: We will start with a half-hour class on Sunday, June 15, from 6:30 to
7 pm, then from 6-7 pm Monday, June 16. We will have another 6-7 hour
class on Wednesday, June 18, followed by Friday, June
20, 6-7 pm. Just show up. No charge. You are welcome even if
you are not taking classes at SSQQ during the month of June.
Take off your penny loafers
and saddle shoes, roll down your socks, and hike up your Pony Skirt - We
are going Back in Time to the SSQQ Sock Hop!
For your information, Sock
Hops got their name back in the 50s because the Principal always made the
kids take off their shoes before the Big Dance in the Gymnasium... tonight
you can keep your shoes on if you want, but you will have a hard time
staying still as we bring back the fabulous dances of the 50s and 60s!
We cover the famous dances of
yesteryear such as the Twist, the Stroll, the Hand Jive, the Harlem
Shuffle, the Hully Gully, the Cha-Cha Hustle, Cold Sweat, plus the SSQQ
Classic Dance "Heard it Thru the Grapevine". In addition this
year we will unveil a new dance: "Land of 1000 Dances" featuring
the Pony, Watusi, Cool Jerk and more!
Then at the Sock Hop Party
later on at three different points in the evening we will perform these
dances as a group and videotape them as well to be shown on the SSQQ Cable
TV Network later in the week! So wear a cool outfit and learn
these dances!
SWIRLEY-TWIRLEY
TRAVELING JITTERBUG SHOW
- Rick
Pre-req: Beginning Swing
Tonight's Sock Hop will feature classic songs like Mony Mony,
Love Potion #9, Johnny Angel,
and Venus. So what do these songs have in common?
At 132 beats per
minute these songs are impossible to dance
using Swing footwork.
The night will be
full of many great Jitterbug songs that are difficult to dance to
because the tempo is too slow.
There is a solution. All you need to do is
learn to Jitterbug! That's where this course comes in.
The moment you learn the secrets of the Traveling Jitterbug footwork,
these songs will suddenly come to life!
The extra motion makes the dancing more interesting and you don’t feel
like you are standing still. Many of these moves and techniques may be
familiar, but tonight we concentrate on these basic moves and develop
them to the point of excellence!!
Please note this is an Intermediate class
aimed at people who are currently taking or have completed Beg Swing or
Int Swing, so if you have never had a Swing
class in your life, steer
clear or speak to Rick in advance. Thanks!
BEGINNING SWING -
Marla
Pre-req: No prerequisite
Level of Difficulty: Easy
It's
pretty hard to enjoy coming to a Sock Hop if you don't know how to
dance! This course should get you ready to dance Swing to
"Jailhouse Rock" by Elvis, "Great Balls of Fire" by
Jerry Lee Lewis, and "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles.
If you don't know how to Swing Dance ahead of time, this is the place to
be from 7-9 before tonight's party.
SWING
ACROBATICS -
Paul
Pre-req: Couples only
Level of Difficulty:
Not Easy, some lifting expected
Nothing
captures the attention of an audience like Swing Acrobatics !
Flips,
Dips, Drops, & Lifts guarantee all eyes in the room will be drawn to
you. These moves are difficult to master until you learn the secrets of
leverage and timing.
Normally
this crash course covers easy
Acrobatic patterns, but due to special requests, this
particular course will teach some toughies instead.
There are some Evel Knievels
at the studio who have been begging for this challenge, so here goes!
INCREDIBLE HUSTLE PATTERNS
-
Scott
Pre-req: Lots and lots of
Hustle
Everyone
wanted a Hustle 6 in June, but were good sports about letting Argentine
Tango sneak in and steal their spot.
So as a reward for being kind, Scott will teach some of the patterns he
would have covered in Hustle 6.
Do not take this class unless you are a GOOD Hustle dancer.
BEG
WEST COAST SWING -
Patty and Joe
Pre-req: No prerequisite
Level of Difficulty: Moderately hard
West Coast Swing
is a wonderful partner dance used to Disco and Rock
music. Featuring clever footwork, interest in WCS here
in Houston is on a definite upsurge. This CC will give
you a chance to see first-hand what the fuss is about. Obviously you don't have time to
master the dance, but you will learn enough to enjoy the
evening!
JACK'S FAVORITE MARTIAN
WHIP PATTERNS
- Jack
Pre-req:
Jack's Martian Technique or higher
The Sock Hop Party
is two dances in one. Not only do you have the great Jitterbug
songs of the 60s and 70s, in Room 6 you will have all sorts of
opportunities to practice what you learned to the great rhythm and blues
hits of the 60s like "Respect" and "Heard it Thru the
Grapevine"!
Indeed, the Sock Hop is considered one of the three
best Whip/West Coast Swing parties of the year (Sleazy Bar Whip and
Halloween being the other two).
To help get you in the mood, Jack Benard will conduct
a two-hour greatest hits Whip Workshop.
