BEG SALSA - Alex
Prerequisite: None

Salsa is the hottest dance on the planet.  In order to enjoy tonight's party, you need to know the Basics of Salsa Dancing.

If you are a total beginner, this is exactly the class you need to be taking!!

BEGINNING MERENGUE - Jill
No prerequisite

Merengue is a major Salsa dance known as the "Walking Dance". When you dance Merengue, you take a step on each beat of the music.

Featuring terrific hip motion and fun patterns, Merengue is a major dance in the Latin clubs!  "Salsa" is of course the dominant dance at the Salsa clubs, but Merengue music gets played often as well so it is an important dance to add to your repertoire.

Merengue is lots of fun and very easy to learn.

 BACHATA - Linda
No prerequisite

Bachata is a slow Latin dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. It is based on an ancient African dance rhythm known as 'Ibo' brought over by slaves stolen from the Nigerian Kwa tribe in the early 1800s.

Bachata lyrics are almost always about heartbreak or unrequited love. Known as  "la música de amargue" (the music of bitterness), it developed as music for the poorest neighborhoods of the Dominican Republic.

In many ways the history of bachata music is similar to that of American blues. Originally a rural, guitar-based form, bachata was the music of the poor and uneducated. Now it is entering mainstream Salsa music.

The lyrics often contain raw double-entendres and bawdy sexual innuendoes. Whether its the suggestive lyrics or the sensual style of the Bachata, this dance is starting to get a "bad reputation".  In fact Bachata has been compared to Bossa Nova, another Latin dance with a "bad reputation".

And now that you know about how naughty Bachata is, come learn how to dance it!

 INTERMEDIATE SALSA PTNS - Martin
Prerequisite: Completion of Beg Salsa

We have one favor to ask - please don't take this class unless you have already FINISHED Beg Salsa.  It is not fair to the rest of the class to have people trying to fake their way thru the class.

SALSA DIPS AND LUNGES
- Steve
Prerequisite:
Intermediate Salsa, Couples Only

Okay, so you know how to Salsa and you know how to move. Now it's time to show off!!

Salsa Dips and Lunges add Theater Arts to the hottest dance around. Draw every eye in the room straight to you as you perform dance tricks that people will love to watch!  Please note these are acrobatic patterns where the woman's feet do not leave the floor.  Some of the patterns are tricky, but not dangerous.

CUMBIA/TEJANO - Luis
Prerequisite: none

There are three types of Cumbias: Tejano, Columbian, and Cuban.

This course covers both the Tejano Cumbia, the Tejano Polka, and Cuban Cumbia (please note the Columbian Cumbia is covered in our Salsa classes).

The Tejano Polka (sometimes called the "Mexican Polka") uses a walking dance as opposed to the triple step footwork of the Texas Polka.
