TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE: THE SSQQ CRUISE TO MARDI GRAS AND COZUMEL!!

http://ssqq.com/information/mardigrashome.htm

SSQQ has scheduled a 7 Day Cruise to visit the 2004 New Orleans' Mardi Gras. We will sail aboard Royal Caribbean's beautiful Rhapsody of the Seas. We leave Sunday, February 22nd, and return on Sunday, February 29th.

We will reach New Orleans Monday evening in time for a wild night of dancing on Bourbon Street. Then after a little rest, on Tuesday we hit the peak of Mardi Gras during the legendary Fat Tuesday, the day of Parades, revelry, and legalized insanity.

We remain in New Orleans Wednesday till 6 pm, then it is off to the sparkling warm waters of beautiful Cozumel. While others shiver stateside in the middle of winter, our group will work on our suntans at the famous Chankanaab Beach.

This exciting trip promises to be the experience of a lifetime!

WHO WILL BE THE NIFTY FIFTY??
(check out to see who is already going to Mardi Gras:
http://ssqq.com/information/mardigraspassengers.htm )

Last year's Mardi Gras was way down due to fears about the Iraqi War so chances are this year's event is going to be huge.

As a result, the demand for this cruise trip has been very high. We were only able to reserve space for 50 people and we had to fight just to get these cabins as it is.

Consequently there is only limited space left aboard this trip. THE RHAPSODY IS PRACTICALLY SOLD OUT. In fact since we started advertising this trip just one week ago, they have already raised the price $14 person. Therefore the SSQQ price is already lower than the quoted going rate.

We already have 16 people aboard in just ONE WEEK with many nibbles to boot. If you wish to go on this trip, you simply CANNOT WAIT to decide.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE GET A $250 DEPOSIT BY SEPTEMBER 3. You know the game - after you make your deposit, you then have till December 13th to make up your mind (December 13th is the last day you are entitled to a full refund of your $250).

Let's go over this again: As of now, in only one week we have reserved 16 of 50 places. For $250, you lock in a reservation. You then have two and a half months to make up your mind for sure. If you decide to GO, then final payment is due on December 13th. If you decide NOT TO GO, then you have till December 13th to get ALL OF YOUR $250 back.

This trip is a surefire hit. Unfortunately we only have 25 cabins. We can only take 50 people.
Someone is going to miss out on joining us.

Check out the ssqq web site for the price, to see who is going, and further promotional information -

THE SEPTEMBER SCHEDULE OF SSQQ DANCE CLASSES.

The September Dance Semester begins the week of Sunday, August 31st .

http://www.ssqq.com/ssqq/schedule.htm

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEPTEMBER 2003 SCHEDULE
http://www.ssqq.com/ssqq/extra.htm

BALLROOM WALTZ will be offered on Sundays in September with Judy Archer. As you know, Waltz is the legendary dance of Cinderella at the Ball. This beautiful, flowing dance has two styles - Traveling (Western Waltz) and Stationary (Ballroom Waltz). In this course you will learn all the variations off the Box Step, Twinkles, & much more!

The legendary Disco partner dance LATIN HUSTLE will be taught by Jack Benard on Sundays in September. Hustle footwork & timing is very similar to West Coast Swing & its patterns are very similar to East Coast Swing. BACK DUE TO MANY REQUESTS.

ADVANCED LINDY HOP with Gloria Sanchez has been added to Sunday in September due a petition with 12 names on it. A lot of people are looking forward to it!

BEGINNING AMERICAN TANGO will be offered on Sundays at 7 pm. Tango is a timeless symbol for the dark side of romance. Stylish & dramatic, Tango combines sleek, hip-locked, gliding steps with abrupt stops into fans, flicks, flares, dips, & lunges. Eerie music, sultry motion, & the haunting sense of dark moods barely under control make Tango a truly fascinating dance! Room 4 will be strictly reserved for Tango afterwards.

SLOW DANCE AND ROMANCE on Mondays covers 3 forms of Slow Dancing (Foxtrot, Walking Slow Dance, Rhythm-Switch Slow Dance). You will learn everything you ever wanted to know about Slow Dancing to slow, romantic music such as "Unforgettable". It is the perfect course to take if you are getting married or want to be able to slow dance gracefully on New Year's Eve or at smoky lounges to slow jazz dance music. This course will be taught by Marty and Adele Raber with Charlene Tees assisting.

Linda Cook will offer a special course in TEJANO/CUMBIA AND MEXICAN POLKA on Tuesdays in September. Linda reports these dances are very similar to our Twostep and Polka with slight differences. Linda often tells her Tejano students that they should next go to a Country-Western class so they can learn more and switch it where they need to match the rhythm. Linda promises the dancing is fun as well.

September brings us Sharon Crawford's much-anticipated BEGINNING WESTERN CHA CHA class. Like Sharon's famous Western Waltz program, she intends to teach four straight months of Cha-Cha. Cha Cha is the famous Latin dance that works surprisingly well to slow Western Polkas with a romantic Latin feel to them ("Neon Moon", "Tequila Town"). In the past several years, Western Cha Cha has become a big part of Country-Western Dance Competitions. You might be surprised at how complex and interesting this dance can be. Cha Cha can vary from sexy and flirtatious to a dance with turns patterns just as interesting as Western Swing or West Coast Swing.

DEATH VALLEY 9 will be offered on Fridays with Brian White as the teacher. As a former member of the legendary world champion Heartbeat Western Dance Team, Brian has been creating the Death Valley patterns all year long. He is a very accomplished Western dancer. Now you get the chance to learn highly advanced Western patterns from the source himself! This class will present a marvelous challenge to any & all experience dancers.

DARYL ARMSTRONG AND THE TATTOO LEATHER AND LACE PARTY.

The Tattoo Leather and Lace Party is an annual event hosted by Daryl Armstrong, his lovely wife Joanne, and their close friend Rocky Kneten. It is my understanding that this party is at least 5 years old. Up till now, the party has always been in Rocky Kneten's hidden photography lab in the middle of nowhere, but this year the party is moving over to SSQQ.

Daryl, Joanne, and Rocky intend to bring their special brand of debauchery straight to our door!! The music will include Whip, Western, and Swing.

Daryl is very insistent that everyone comply with the dress code for the party: This includes TWO VISIBLE TATTOOS, LEATHER, AND AS MUCH SKIN AS POSSIBLE. To show how open-minded he is, Daryl said he would slide on the Lace if it was obvious someone was trying to dress indecently otherwise. If you think Daryl is kidding about the Tattoos though, he is not. You either have the Tattoos or don't come to the party. Daryl promises to stick you with a tattoo himself if you are too lazy to take care of the problem yourself.

A rule is a rule. Remember there is a 'Two' in Tattoo. That means Two Tat-twos!

Please Note that no one has to wear a Tattoo to attend the Crash Courses. The Tattoo Rule is Party-Only.

Since everyone is going to look pretty weird, Rocky Kneten will provide a photo opportunity for everyone. Rocky is a professional photographer. He will create a picture laboratory so you can take home some interesting memories. Rocky has some stories to tell about some of the pictures incidentally, but I don't know if you can talk him into sharing them.

We have named Rocky's photo adventure "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Never has there been a more perfectly apt term for an event.

Daryl Armstrong is a pretty busy guy these days. For one thing, his wife Joanne recently gave birth to their second child Aly to go with their son Austin. Daryl and Joanne are making steady progress towards opening up a coffee shop, but it is still pretty much in the planning stages.

Over the years at SSQQ, Daryl has been notorious for his interesting dance classes. For one thing, he openly will tell anyone who asks that he can barely dance. Or he might tell them that he usually doesn't have much insight into what he is teaching. Despite his self-deprecating style, Daryl's dance classes have always been among the largest classes at the studio. Daryl is famous for four things: his themes for every dance class (Hawaiian Shirts, Red Underwear, Sunglasses, Elvis, and so on), his Margarita Tours, his Tattoo Leather and Lace Parties, and. Daryl is also known for having probably the sharpest wit of all our instructors despite some serious competition. Daryl is such an amazing guy. Over the years I have always enjoyed watching his antics. In fact, two years ago I wrote a story about Daryl you will definitely enjoy reading.

SUSIE MERRILL WILL RETURN TO VISIT AT THE SEPTEMBER DUDE RANCH PARTY

Susie Merrill is a longtime SSQQ Instructor who retired after 15 years of teaching from the studio earlier this year in January 2003.

Susie started at SSQQ in 1988 about the same time as Sharon Crawford (1987) and Ben Liles (1988). Judy Archer came along in 1989. I remember Susie many experiences here at the studio, but she is best-known for two things in particular - her love of the dance known as "Night Club Twostep" and as the talented coach of the world champion dance team Heartbeat which trained here at SSQQ.

Susie took Night Club Twostep, a dance that basically very few Houstonians had ever heard of, and made it a very popular dance here at SSQQ. Night Club is used to very slow Western Ballads. With footwork similar to a variety of different dances - Rumba, Salsa, Cumbia, Waltz to name a few - Night Club is a unique dance that matches very lovely dance patterns to very slow and beautiful music. Once Night Club Twostep became an important part of the Western dance competitions, Susie decided her team needed to master this dance in order to perform Night Club at Worlds. At the same time that she mastered every move she could find to this complex dance, Susie decided the entire studio might enjoy learning the dance besides just her team members.

Although the dance had been introduced at SSQQ years earlier, it had never quite caught on. Susie single-handedly inspired so many people to take Night Club that she eventually offered FOUR levels of a dance that had never even existed before!! Susie's Night Club program was an amazing success.

Even more amazing was Susie's coaching work with the love of her life, the Heartbeat Dance Team. Susie started Heartbeat in 1997. Many current SSQQ instructors were on Susie's team at one time or another including Anita Williams, Ben Liles, Ann Bush, Brian White, Mo Hendrix, Jill Banta, Christine Sandel, Martin Anderson, Gloria Sanchez, and Susan Waring. As you can see from this impressive list of names, Susie's Heartbeat legacy remains strong today. This team stuck together for five and a half years and matured into an amazing group of performers. Their crowning achievement was winning First Place in the international competition known as the UCWDC World Championships in early January 2003.

Unfortunately all this success came at a price. In addition to her "real job", Susie must have put in 5 days a week and 15-20 hours a week coaching Heartbeat. Susie is so talented, so determined, and so energetic that she pulled it off, but a serious illness suffered by her husband Bill Merrill was the straw that broke the camel's back. The stress of the Heartbeat Team and the stress of Bill's mysterious problems was just too much for her. After Heartbeat won the championship, Susie decided it was time to go off and heal for a while so she retired from her dance teaching duties here at the studio.

Then more problems developed - as Houston's economy hit a rough spot, Susie lost her job. Unable to find work here in Houston, Susie spent time at her lake house up in Longview, Texas (in East Texas due east from Dallas near the Arkansas border). She found that the high school there needed a science teacher. Teaching and Science are two Susie's favorite passions so she accepted the position and made her move to Longview a semi-permanent one.

Last August as I though about the September Schedule, I noticed it was time for the Dude Ranch Dance Party again. This party was originally created as a combination tribute and loving spoof to Susie's longtime friend Sharon Crawford. They will always be linked in my mind together. I wondered if Susie would be interested in coming back for this popular event so I asked her to teach a Night Club class. To my pleasant surprise, she enthusiastically said "Yes".

I know many of you will enjoy welcoming Susie back on Saturday, September 27, as she teaches an Intermediate Night Club pattern the first hour and an Advanced pattern the second hour.

RESULTS OF THE AUGUST LOGIC PUZZLE RESULTS - THE GALLERIA

The August Puzzle was really tough. I know this for a fact because I had to stop and start over four times before I finally licked it myself. So our following ten winners are to be congratulated not only for their persistence, but also for the ample brain wattage that had to be involved to nail this difficult test. Nice work, everyone!!

1. Ryan Borelo (first time winner)
2. Elicia Anderson (first time winner)
3. Robby Thompson (second month in a row)
4. Mara Rivas (second month in a row)
5. Susan Arevalo (who also contributed this month's puzzle)
6. Terry Simon-Carpenter (third month in a row)
7. Pete Bunning (second month in a row)
8. Marlies Whitmoyer (She's Back!!)
9. Jeff and Connie Woodman (second month in a row)
10. Troy Murrell (SSQQ Staffer Diane Murrell's son)
11. Ann Faget
(second month in a row)

I am especially pleased to note Marlies Whitmoyer is back this month. For some unknown reason, Marlies could not seem to get me the answer to the July Logic Puzzle even though she said she was working on it. I was deeply worried that Mara Rivas had done something to harm Marlies. My reasons for suspicion are as follows: Mara claimed to have lost her mind solving logic puzzles. Marlies solves logic puzzles compulsively and is never at ease until they are done. Mara and Marlies are best friends. Marlies stopped solving the puzzle at the same moment Mara regained her mind. I suspected brain theft.

I am SO relieved that Marlies was able to rejoin us this month, but alas, I am afraid she is still suffering from a brain malady of some sort.

On Thursday last week I heard one of the stupidest jokes of all time (it was told to me by Sandy Lenard-doozy):

"One day this blonde guy shows his neighbor two incredibly dangerous looking German Shepherds that he has just bought to keep an eye on the house while he is at work.

The neighbor asked what he named them.

"Timex and Rolex".

"Why on earth did you name them that?"

"Well, duh, isn't it obvious? They're watch dogs!!  Do I have to explain everything?"

The next night I retold this joke to Marlies who happens to be blonde herself.  Judging from her smile, Marlies liked it a lot. In fact now that I think about it she was the only one who laughed.  I think you have to blonde to truly appreciate a joke like this. Anyhow a couple days later I received the following email from her:

-----Original Message-----
From: Whitmoyer, Marlies M
Sent: Wednesday, August 27, 2003 2:14 PM
To: Rick
Subject: Watchdog joke

Rick, Would you be a sweetie, like I know you are, and email me that horrible joke you told about the Watchdogs named Rolex and Timex... I've tried to repeat it (shhhh.. don't tell anybody), but everybody just looks at me in a very odd way. I think I must be saying it wrong. Could you pretty please email it to me?

Thank you, Marlies

Now I have to say that I am deeply worried about Marlies. First, why on earth would anyone ever want to hear a joke that bad a second time?  Second, how on earth could you forget a joke that simple-minded?  I think Marlies has become a thought-impaired zombie and Mara should be investigated for possible brain theft.

AND NOW FOR THE SEPTEMBER SSQQ LOGIC PUZZLE - THE DANCING COUPLES
http://ssqq.com/archive/logicpuzzle09.htm

Difficulty Level: Not Hard.

There are five couples on the dance floor - 5 men dressed in different colored shirts and 5 women dressed in different colored skirts. For all you lovers of the SSQQ Color-Coordinated Award, it turns out that the men and women with matching colors came together. Over the course of 5 songs, each man danced with each woman. Your job is to ascertain what color each person wore and the order of the people they danced with.

First next three correct answers get a free crash course in September. The next seven get a free practice night.

Ready, Set, Go!!
(Editor's Note: This month's puzzle was created by SSQQ dance student Susan Arevalo.  Susan says still recovering from the 4th of July Jubilee Cruise. She was in the previous Newsletter as one of the regular patrons of SSQQ Sidewalk Bistro where she sits to create her Logic Puzzles.  Thank you very much, Susan!

THE SSQQ SIDEWALK BISTRO - FURTHER SIGHTINGS

Just for the record, amazingly all four chairs, all four bushes, and the table are still there after two full months. Unfortunately I over-watered one of the bushes which almost died. Oh well.

And for the second month in a row I even saw some people sitting there!  As I mentioned in last month's Newsletter, on Wednesday, July 30, Gary Thorpe, Michael Tucker, and Susan Arevalo were seen actually sitting at the Bistro after Practice Night.  At the time I was stunned to see this neglected area actually getting some us.

Then to my surprise on Wednesday, August 27, as I left the studio, I was surprised to see the same three sitting there again.  As I got in my car, I also noticed out of the corner of my eye that they were all leaving. The moment I left, so did they the exact instant they thought my back was turned.

It was then I realized that they were just sitting there hoping to be mentioned in the Newsletter again. Some people will do ANYTHING for publicity. Now Isn't that sad?

Subject: Re: Timm Chavez

Yes, Rick, it is okay to announce our engagement. We've told some people, but we just haven't decided on a date, or gotten a ring yet. This has been a expensive month for us, we both had to have lots of work done on our cars ($2500), then my house was broken into (will be awhile replacing things stolen), my car two days later so no money for anything like an engagement ring but we don't mind who knows...........

Linda Cook

(Editor's Note: Linda and Timm have cared about each other deeply for the last ten years, but for one reason or another always find a way to back off just when things are going good. I am very pleased these two people whom I like so very much have decided to commit to each other. I am definitely pulling for them.
And yes, if you want to get married, the place to be is on the SSQQ Staff. Current Staff engagements include Timm and Linda, Rachel Seff, Ann Bush, Brian White, Carol Armand, Patricia Or, Vickie Bernard, Kathleen LaBounty, and myself... quite a few!! Plus I have a hunch there's a couple more teetering on the edge!!)

SSQQ COMPLAINT OF THE MONTH I - UNFAIR TO CHARGE $5 TO FORMER STUDENTS AT PRACTICE NIGHT

Subject: just a thought...

Subject: SSQQ Newsletter

Hi Rick, I recently began my first-ever dance class (Beginning 2-Step/Polka) and have a little commentary to relay.

I have always thought that my center of gravity was not conducive to graceful movement (I come equipped with a lanky 6'4" frame). My girlfriend signed us up for a dance class through Leisure Learning, which happened to land us at SSQQ. While I have no frame of reference for comparison, I have to say that SSQQ is wonderful! I attend the Sunday (and sometimes Wednesday) class and Melissa and Randy are great! I respond well to their teaching style, which is very casual (Randy, who is a big guy too, serves as a great example for me to follow). While I still have MUCH to learn, I am excited to take further classes at your studio. Not only does it provide fun and informative instruction, it is a great ( and safe) social environment.

As a side note: I enjoy your articles (even though I bristled at the Andy Rooney article). Your writing style is eloquent and a pleasure to read.

And... In response to the person who complained about practice night prices I have to ask, have they been out in the clubs anytime in the past, oh, five years? $5, or $3, is a steal!

Anyway, I'll end my loquacious rambling.
Thanks for your time and hard work. It is appreciated.

Sincerely, Scott Young

Thank you for the nice words, Scott.

I agree the flap about the 3 bucks/5 bucks is a little sad, but then you don't know dancers - they will pay $60 for a private dance lesson and argue about $0.50 for a glass of water.

Dancers just assume the cost of music, dance floors, air-conditioning, stereo equipment, electricity and rent are something owed to them. It is this attitude which explains why in Houston there are no whip clubs, no swing clubs, no ballroom clubs, no tango clubs and the fewest western clubs in years.

Dancers historically do not grasp the importance of supporting dance venues.

THE SEPTEMBER JOKE PICTURE OF THE MONTH
FIND THE MISSING WATERFALL!!   (AN IQ TEST FOR MEN)

Contributed by Bett Sundermeyer

This month's picture is a test to see how observant men are. If you are a woman, show some man this picture. Be sure to have a stop watch at hand… or an hourglass will probably do. Tell him to find the missing waterfall. If he finds it in less than a minute, he is a remarkable man. Men are welcome to self-test.

SSQQ EMPLOYEE OF MONTH AWARDS TO MARTIN ANDERSON

On night in the month of August, Martin announced to me that he had cooked several bags of popcorn for Practice Night. Martin went on to add that what made this accomplishment especially remarkable was that it was not his night to stay. In other words, he helped when he wasn't expected to and this was Way Beyond the Call of Duty and he wondered if maybe he could be named "SSQQ Employee of the Month".

I didn't have the heart to tell Martin that many SSQQ staffers do exactly the same thing, especially MG Anseman who cooks popcorn for the entire studio at least twice, sometimes three times a week. MG has been doing this so long I am afraid we take his donation for granted.

One thing Martin is absolutely wonderful at is dancing with Beginners at Practice Night and during Saturday Night Parties. I have watched Martin single-handedly create enthusiasm for Salsa by dancing with all comers. It doesn't bother Martin at all that a student may not know many moves or keep the beat or follow very well. He patiently dances with everyone and they improve because of his efforts. Martin is not the only instructor noted for this - Jack Benard and MG Anseman both come to mind immediately as well. And I have seen Maureen Brunetti do the same thing as well. And there are many others.

Martin is extremely unselfish too. On Thursdays Martin has a lovely Salsa assistant named Michele Hilliard.  The only problem is she has started to get interested in West Coast Swing which is taught on the same night which creates a conflict.  She would stay with Martin as his assistant out of loyalty, but Martin insisted that Michele pursue her interest in WCS instead. Michele is an excellent assistant, so I am proud of Martin for doing the right thing.

Let's face it, Martin is good-looking, he can dance, he can express himself well, he is considerate and now it is revealed he can cook too!  Therefore Martin Anderson not only gets my vote for the August Employee of the Month, but also for SSQQ Bachelor of the Month!!  Girls, let me know if you want Martin's email address!!

And thanks for reading all the way to the bottom! …. I might add I do have reason to believe some of you simply scroll to the bottom to look for any little surprises I hide down here. ;-)

Anyhow, thanks to all for making it this far!

One more thing. In case you were wondering, this issue of the SSQQ Newsletter is equivalent in length to 25 pages.

The End

ABOUT THE SSQQ NEWSLETTER

The SSQQ Newsletter started in January 2000 as a way to update our students on upcoming classes and parties.  Once it became obvious that most SSQQ students had email addresses, the idea was to replace written material and save on wasted paper. The idea quickly caught on in ways we didn't anticipate.

We soon discovered how easy it was to publish all sorts of information.  This allowed the SSQQ Newsletter to evolve into a "Do-It-Yourself" Newspaper. Members of the SSQQ Community began to contribute all sorts of articles, jokes, pictures, puzzles, vocabulary words,  and letters to the editor.

As a result over half of each Newsletter is written by the readers themselves. Our readers are the reporters.  We just edit what you send us and give it back.
